Two ships in the United States Navy have been named after the World War 2 Battle on the Pacific island. The first was an aircraft carrier (CV 40) which served from 1945 until 1960. The second an amphibious assault ship (LHA 1) which served from 1976 until 2009.
A Naval ship is more than just an awesome and powerful weapon, it transports and protects its crew while they guide it on its mission. This site is dedicated to the memory of those ships and the stories of the crew who called them home away from home.
